Broken Cisterns and The Fountain of Living Waters

“For my people have committed two evils; they have
forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and
hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold
no water.” (Jeremiah 2:13)

The book of Jeremiah records the history of the
destruction of Jerusalem, Judah and Israel; but most
importantly it records in God’s own words, “For my
people” the reason for the destruction.

I.  Living Waters

The Fountain of Living waters,
Almighty God, the Father of the
Lord Jesus Christ. (River)

1. Some way God the Father has
been and is THE fountain of living
waters. (Jeremiah 17:1-14).

“O LORD, the hope of Israel, all
that forsake thee shall be
ashamed, and they that depart
from me shall be written in the
earth, because they have forsaken
the LORD, the fountain of living
waters.” (Jeremiah 17:13)

2. When the fountain after THAT
DAY becomes a River of Living
Waters after Megiddo (Zechariah

“And it shall be in that day, that
living waters shall go out from
Jerusalem; half of them toward
the former sea, and half of them
toward the hinder sea: in summer
and in winter shall it be.”
(Zechariah 14:8)

3. THE restoration of all things on
the new earth including
restoration of a mansion for each
believer in a garden like Eden
with a river that waters it.
(Genesis 2:8-10)

“And a river went out of Eden to
water the garden; and from thence
it was parted, and became into
four heads.” (Genesis 2:8)

4. Sometimes on earth as God
manifests His power the “Waters
gush” like a river from the
salvation and blessed of God.
(Psalm 105:38-43)

“He opened the rock, and the
waters gushed out; they ran in the
dry places like a river.” (Psalm

5. God spoke through Isaiah
comparing the peace in the
northern kingdom, specifically at
Shiloh, with peaceful waters, and
contrasted that to Assyria with
raging waters of a river. (Isaiah 8:

“Forasmuch as this people
refuseth the waters of Shiloah
that go softly, and rejoice in Rezin
and Remaliah’s son; Now
therefore, behold, the Lord
bringeth up upon them the waters
of the river, strong and many,
even the king of Assyria, and all
his glory: and he shall come up
over all his channels, and go over
all his banks…” (Isaiah 8:6,7)

6. Out of his belly shall come
rivers of living water. (John 4:10)

“Jesus answered and said unto
her, If thou knewest the gift of
God, and who it is that saith to
Give me to drink; thou wouldest
have asked of him, and he would
have given thee living water.

7. Rivers of Living Water (John 7:

“In the last day, that great day of
the feast, Jesus stood and cried,
saying, If any man thirst, let him
come unto me, and drink. He that
believeth on me, as the scripture
hath said, out of his belly shall
flow rivers of living water. (But
this spake he of the Spirit, which
they that believe on him should
receive: for the Holy Ghost was
not yet given; because that Jesus
was not yet glorified.)

8. The fountain of the water of

“And he said unto me, It is done. I
am Alpha and Omega, the
beginning and the end. I will give
him that is athirst of the fountain
of the water of life freely.”
(Revelation 21:6)

9. River of the water of Life.

“And he showed me a pure river
of water of life, clear as crystal,
proceeding out of the throne of
God and of the Lamb.”
(Revelation 22:1)

10. Water of Life. (Revelation 22:

“And the Spirit and the bride say,
Come. And let him that heareth
say, Come. And let him that is
athirst come. And whosoever will,
let him take the water of life freely.

II.  Broken Cisterns

1. Broken Cistern, of all places, in the Temple at
Jerusalem in the days of Jeremiah before
destruction. In the second broken cistern below, we
will find many similarities between Baal and Allah
worship; however the starting point must be an
intellectual honesty on Judaism in Jeremiah as
considered in the Temple worship, such shows us
likewise similarities between Baal and Judaism.

“Behold, ye trust in lying words, that cannot
profit. Will ye steal, murder and commit adultery,
and swear falsely, and burn incense unto Baal,
and walk after other gods {like Baal and Allah,
the false god of Saudi Arabia, the chidren of
Ishmael} whom ye know not; and come and
stand before me in this house, which is called
by my name, and say, We are delivered to do all
these abominations” (Jeremiah 7:8-10)

NOTE: All these bad things you can find
recommended in the Koran, such at to lie, etc.

2. Broken Cistern of Baal.

“As we shall see, the hard evidence demonstrates
that the god Allah was a pagan deity. In fact, he
was the Moon-god who was married to the sun
goddess and the stars were his daughters.” {from

3. Broken Cistern of Allah.

“According to Middle East scholar E.M.Wherry,
whose translation of the Koran is still used
today, in pre-Islamic times Allah-worship, as
well as the worship of Baal, were both astral
religions in that they involved the worship of
the sun, the moon, and the stars (A
Comprehensive Commentary on the Quran,
Osnabrück: Otto Zeller Verlag, 1973, p. 36).”

4. Broken Cistern of a Friend of the World.

“No man can serve two masters: for either he
will hate the one, and love the other; or else he
hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye
cannot serve God and mammon.” (Matthew
Somehow Americans have rationalized that the
forbidden “world” and “of the world” in the
Bible means the world outside the US. Not so!
The world is of the US, Europe, and of any
other so-called Christian nation or organization.
The world, or not of the world, is a
committment of heart to those things of the
Father that abide forever.

NOTE: Those Christians considered in “The
Establishment” like in government or education
or Wall Street and banks, or just plain retired
millionaires are at high risk for being a friend of
the world.

“Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not
that the friendship of the world is enmity with
God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of
the world is the enemy of God.” (James 4:4)

Obviously James, written to church members,
speaks of the second level of the Jezebel, an
adultery of fornication that is spiritual of
forsaking God, the fountain of living waters, for
a broken cistern in the words of God through
Jeremiah in 2:13.

5. Broken Cistern in the Garden of Eden. {Pride
and THE LIE}

6. Broken Cistern of Love of the World.

“Love not the world, neither the things that are
in the world. If any man love the world, the love
of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the
world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the
eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father,
but is of the world.” (I John 2:15,16)

This love of the world with the lust of the flesh,
the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life {this
third is so easily slipped into by Christians}, and
Satan finds this a very good weapon of
destruction. The love of the world is very
closely related to what Jesus said about
“Whoever is the friend of the world is the
enemy of God.”

7. Broken Cistern of Unsound Doctrine.

“For the time will come when they will not
endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts
shall they heap to themselves teachers, having
itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears
from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.”
(II Timothy 4:3,4)

The religious toleration of many religions and
groups even when unsound doctrine is obvious
is more a intolerance of sound doctrine than a
toleration of unsound doctrines, also PR and
the democratic tendency to get along, just plain
spiritual laziness for contending for the faith
(Jude 3), and the desire to be Friends with the

8. Broken Cistern of Falling Away.

“And because iniquity shall abound, the love of
many shall wax cold.” (Matthew 24:12)

So many religious speakers and organizations
today appear flawless on doctrine; however it is
impossible to look on the heart as Jesus did, to
find what was a first love for Jesus has become
through the present and great final apostasy
called the Falling away, a “love that waxes cold.
