Part 4, tongues, unknown tongues, and the gifts of the Holy Spirit

I Corinthians 14, the Bible chapter on “unknown tongues”. Granted we are making too much of this unknown tongues business, mentioned only 6 times in the New Testament, and that all 6 of them are in this single chapter. Is it it not obvious that the statement of the Swaggarts of “we offer a baptism in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of the speaking in unknown tongues” is false; for many reasons besides it is just plain not taught in the Bible, but also Paul would have inserted such a critical piece of evidence here in chapter 14 had it been so.
You see what the Swaggarts are saying in this often heard statement: (1) that you can get it only here; and (2) these Christians and worshippers have something special from the spirit of God, say a special gift, that other worshippers do not have; (3) it makes other Christian worshippers, especially as listerners to the Swaggarts, feel bad because they are unfruitful or incomplete Christians. Brethren, this ought not to be!
Study the real gifts in the NT, there is a gift to understand tongues and speak in tongues but never a gift to understand and speak in unknown tongues.

The gift Timothy received with the laying on of hands from Paul, II Timothy
“6
Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting
on of my hands.
7
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

was that gift with the laying on of hands, the speaking of an unknown tongue; No, what the gift of the Holy Spirit was is specifically lack of fear, power and a sound mind. Do you not think that if what the Swaggarts are striving to impose on the Bible without authorization were true, there would be many examples in the Bible when Christians gathered to worship that they spoke in unknown tongues. There is none, and here what Timothy, Paul’s own son in the faith, received as a gift with the laying on of hands were specific things but no evidence in the speaking in unknown tongues. It is sort of like the secret rapture with words not known in the Bible like rapture, dispensations, and millennium, words imposed on the Bible, and are included in the itching ears teachings of II Timothy 4:3,4. Also included in the Expositors Bibe, and as Christians we have more to fear from Swaggart’s notes in the Expositors Bible which have sold 26 million copies, that we have to fear from any other existentia truth to the truth of the Bible, a threat that we must contend against. If only one young and innocent youth raised in their church is mislead to speak publically in an unknown tongue, which we have witnessed often without any interpretation, having the misconception that this unknown tongue is a gift of the Holy Spirit thereby missing their real gift of the Holy Spirit, then it is defintely a practice to be condemned in the church and churches; yet in the notes inside the verses of the Expositors Bible, we encounter so many inadequacies of Bible interpretation. We though it was bad for Joseph Smith to insert false doctrine into the verses of the Mormon KJV, but how much worse is the Expositors Bible.

Gifts in I Corinthians 12–this would be the place for Paul to place the evidence of unknown tongues; yet in 2 gifts of the Spirit–(1) “divers kinds of tongues” and (2) “the interpretation of tongues”, obviously this are both known tongues and not unknown tongues.
“For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same
Spirit;
9
To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
10
To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another
divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:
conclusion:
that statement “baptism in the Spirit with evidence of speaking in unknown tongues” is the key to the popularity of the ministries of the younger Swaggarts even as smiling while speaking all peace and optimism is the crux of popularity of Osteen. Give them credit for knowing how to make millions, but not credit for being silver and gold in the household of God rather than dirt and wood as are all itching ears teachers, even when itching ears teachings is only a part of their ministry. Half truth is so dangerous whether it comes fromthe Mormons or the Swaggarts or the Osteens.
