Idolatry and the Moral Majority in Jeremiah and America Part 2

Moral Majority  in America, do you (“…abhor idols, do you rob temples?”)

NOTE:  Robbing temples in Romans is the equivalent of den of thieves of Jeremiah 7:11 and Jesus when He quoted it and drove the money changers out of the Temple.  Have you considered that any church that makes money is also a NATIONAL DEN OF THIEVES as for example the Osteens who mother owns the church and the Swaggerts that own Family Worship and evangelism; and these are two of the outstanding and popular preachers of prosperity, in this day of Christian fables and the great apostasy called the Falling Away there are many more.
The great difference between the  movement of Jerry Falwell called the Moral Majority and the fundamentalists that now control the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) is that these fundamentalists of approximately 30 years ago have gotten away with it. They are accepted by the majority of Baptists, and retain control of the SBC. Obviously the movement of the Moral Majority was to encourage most Americans into thinking that because they were law-abiding citizens, that they were also part of Christianity, even part of the kingdom movement of Christ. Not so! And this has happened before among the most religious people {Americans would be number two} that ever lived during the days of the Apostle Paul. The Jews of Judaism, of the days of Jesus and Paul, must be consider as the original moral majority. They kept all the laws of God, and more, they thought! Yet along comes a converted Jew, the Apostle Paul, and after through the new birth in the Lord Jesus Christ and the call to be an apostle to write the majority of the New Testament books including Romans, tried to straighten out this misconception of “law-keeping” for the Jews and Christians of his day as well as for believers in the Bible as the Word of God today.
17-1: You Just Think You are a Moral Majority, Yet Bottom line you American Christians, like the Jews, are committing idolatry like God’s people {the original Jews of Jerusalem where the name came from} of Jeremiah.
Look and listen to the words of Romans 2:21-22, for you are not asked to take the opinion of another person, rather the Word of God on this matter of the moral majority that really is not! {Hopefully you will take these words personally as from God to another one of His creatures.}
“You, therefore, who teach another, do you not teach yourself? You who preach that a man should not steal, do you steal? You who say, ‘Do not commit adultery,’ do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?” (Romans 2:21-22)
In the trend of today’s Skinnernites of “behavorism” we tend to take the approach of the moral majority of Jews and Americans today, choosing the overt behavior of law breaking as the only violation of the 10 commandments , forgetting the cognitive aspect of thought and character and the Scripture that “as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he”. Would that we could have a revival of Charles Allen, former pastor of First Methodist Church in Houston, who wrote a book on the 10 commandments under the subject heading of “God’s Pattern for Thinking”; and stressing how, like originally from Jesus who laid down that violations of the law come from thoughts in the heart, point by point in the 10 commandments how members of his church and all Americans, indeed all humanity, break each of the 10 commandments by what they think even more than what they do. Those good and sound Bible arguments, consitent with the approach of Jesus {“…whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment. But I say to you that however is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment.” (Matthew 5:21,22) And so only through most of the commandments.} will not be repeated here on 9 out of 10 of those commandments in favor of an emphasis on how Christians today, like the Jews, practiced IDOLATRY.
“You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?” (Romans 2:22)
And let us pass on to how Americans commit IDOLATRY by robbing temples; within itself a very difficult concept to understand even you have been involved in the studies of Jeremiah on “Den of Thieves”, reinforced by Jesus twice in the temple as He drive money changers from the Temple, stressing a house of prayer and worship was not to be made a “house of merchandizing” and “a den of thieves”, Jesus quoting from the Temple Message of Jeremiah in Jeremiah 7:11.
Just let us momentarily leave this question of the morals and law breaking of the moral majority, except for the question of today’s Christian violations of IDOLATRY, with the emphasis also from Paul in Romans {also echoed in Galatians which is a miniature of Romans}, that the law or 10 commandments were never meant to be a religion for salvation, rather as a means to bring the Christian like a schoolmaster to the Lord Jesus Christ. {Can you say Amen!}
“Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.” (Galatians 3:24)
17-2: You American Church Members, like in Jerusalem of Jeremiah, are IDOLATERS in that “you rob temples”.
Wow, that is hard to bear; but it is based on the Word of God as you have just read. And hopefully during these almost 3 years of Bible Studies in Jeremiah, and the previous book from SunGrist_Bible on “Den of Thieves”, you have come to see similarities between the backsliding of Jerusalem with the present great apostasy of the Falling Away in American churches. Granted, you honestly thought that the last weekly violation you made of the Ten Commandments was to make idols in the place of the LORD God of the Universe, the father of the Lord Jesus Christ. It is hard for you church members; because according to the description of the 5 stages of the Falling Away in II Timothy 4:4,5, the job of the pastor you have chosen is to make you feel more righteous and Christian than any other pastor; and all Jerry Falwell with his fellow organizers of the Moral Majority, Charles Stanley and Tim LeHaye, did with the moral majority was to practice popularly and more successfully on a larger scale the making of congregations feel good because they were so good, moral, and righteous just as American citizens. {It is closely related to the misconception of Contemporary American Thought–like in the “mission of America” where encouraging democracy among the third world countries is consider like making them Christians– that to be an American is synonymous with the being a Christian!}
1. You are reminded of what Jeremiah said in the famous Temple Message of Jeremiah 7:11 about robbers of temples under the words of “Den of Thieves”.
2. What Jesus said about “Den of Thieves”.
3. What Jesus said about making a house of prayer into a house of merchandizing.
4. Exegesis of Romans 2:22c–”You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?”–from A HANDY COMMENTARY by Clark and Pendelton.
5. When you read Romans 2:22c–”You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?”–just do so practicing the simple principles of Bible hermeneutics, the science of biblical interpretation, or the principles that God Himself lays down in the Bible for the understanding of the Bible {you who are faithful to the SunGrist_Bible website of know it to be the ASPI, Authorized Semi-Public Interpretation of the Bible, based on II Peter 1:20,21}.
It is obvious for the context of Romans 2:22–Romans chapter 2–that Paul thinks {no, it is more than that as this is part of the Word of God} his Jewish brethren have in spite of their world leadership in religion, are point by point living in violation of all the commandments. They really steal, and commit adultery, and murder in ways they have refused to think {actually these ways are also in the Old Testament, like the royal law of Leviticus and James for those who have eyes to see}; and worse than that, and in spite of Bible scholars claiming that the Jews were cured of IDOLATRY by their 70 years of captivity in Babylon, they continued during the time of Christ and Paul, even like today among church members, to practice the supreme sin of IDOLATRY by the desceration of the intended purpose of temples, synagogues, and other houses of prayer and worship. {You know how thousands of churches today in America have become more a place of social fellowship and recreational activity, even friendship, than they are any real place of WORSHIP and PRAYER. You send this trend obvious in the discontinuation or minimizing of Wednesday night as a night of prayer, more often business or a church supper}, and also the discontinuation of the Sunday evening services, as the Sabbath day commandment is completed at noon, just before football}.
17-3: This naturally brings us to the specifics of IDOLATRY in Romans 1:22,23 where the truth and truths of God {the many proofs of the existence of this LORD God of the Universe} are substituted with THE LIE that there is any other legitimate and real God, called gods.
“Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image make like corruptible man {you see this could be a football player}–and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.” (Romans 1:22,23)
The real sin of idolatry is less in the making of some idolic statute, pole, or stone: it is more in the mental image that must exist in the mind of the IDOLATRY in order to construction such a work of his own hands. It is another sign of the human weakness for control self-control. Isaiah tells of a certain man who cut down a tree; then the wood from the tree, he made a fire to first warm himself and then feed himself. Finally after all the body comforts were taken care of, and with the remains of the tree he whittle out a “god” to bow down and worship. This is the ultimate sense of self control, and accounts for most of the idolatry of the children of Israel during the time of Jeremiah, also of the idolatry of Christians today! In short, what we want to construct in our own mind, sometimes in material images, is a god who allows us to do exactly what we want, a god who will simply provide for all our needs and comforts; a god who will not in turn make any demands of Lordship on our lives.
Are you staring to get the Bible picture of IDOLATRY? Perhaps the greatest shock to readers is to learn how much adoration and homage the great and only real God of this Universe expects from us, the only Father of the only Lord Jesus Christ. {Hallowed be that great names and reputations!}
17-4: Now here is the last and gigantic step of IDOLATRY: God is chastising the people along the Mississippi River with floods because of their idolatry; chastening the people of Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and other states with tornadoes because of their idolatry; and God is punishing New Mexico and Texas with drought and wild fires because of their idolatry.
Extensively from the Bible Studies in Jeremiah, we have tried to distinguish between the Bible sent “calamities” of the first kind, where God sends these “acts of nature” or “acts of God” for chastisement on His own people from the second kind which are sort of on automatic control as “the earth groans in travail like a women in child birth” which continues the wonders in the earth beneath and heavens above until this old earth is destroyed in order to usher in a new earth! What is confusing is that as we near the end time of the Falling Away, the release of Satan from bondage with the withdrawal of the Holy Spirit from earth, those calamities of the second time grow in such intensity that we can not distinguish them from the first kind where God is chastising His own people; or even a combination of the first and second kind. Then there is the third kind of calamities taught in the Bible, especially in Jeremiah as God pronounces judgment on all nations and on the whole world, calamities of judgment on the wicked like noted in Sodom and Gomorrah.
In spite of some sense of justice that God has not been asleep as so many American Christians and church members go about their routines with “pride” doing the same thing predicted at the Second Coming–”eating, drinking, marrying, and giving in marriage” without real concerns for the things of God–and as gambling {another violation of the commandment against greed and covetousness, even stealing}, like in those Casinos in Mississippi have been flooded out of business by this Act of God down the Mississippi River; yet in spite of this obvious justice of God’s own chastisement, we would never gloat.
“He who mocks the poor reproaches his Maker; He who is glad at calamity will not go unpunished.” (Proverbs 17:5)
NOTE: By the way, for a more thorough and Biblical look at “calamity” in the Bible, go to the web page on that subject, “Calamities Are ‘acts of God’”.
17-5: Actually the sins of Judah and Jerusalem, like in American churches today, can be summarized as twofold__first idolatry then mistreatment of the people in the land, the idolatry allowing them to construct in their own minds and idols the image of gods that would allow, goodness would encourage, this mistreatment of the people in the land.
“Behold, you trust in lying words that cannot profit. Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely,burn incense to Baal, and walk after other gods whom you do not know, and then come and stand before Me in this house which is called by My name, and say, ‘We are delivered to do all these abominations?” (Jeremiah 7:8-10)
You have to practice IDOLATRY just to be such a hypocrite. Live one way during the week in violation of the 10 commandments, and in mistreatment of the people in the land, and the mistreatment of the Only God of the Universe; and then innocently come to church with that smug and comfortable look on your face to have the pretence to actually worship God and pray to God. All the time having the attitude “We are safe!–just so that you may continue doing all these abominable things?” (ASV of Jeremiah 7:10b)
