PTB #13b: Inspiration versus Scofield Private Interpretations.

INTRODUCTION:  Two well know Scriptures properly introduce this subject of “Inspiration versus the Private Interpretations of Scofield:

1.  “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and if profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, and instruction in righteousness that the man of God may be complete, througly furnished until all good works.”

Your Bible was given by inspiration of God, Scofield notes in your Bible were given by dispensationalists to support Zionism; your Bible is profitable for doctrine, private notes of Scofield are for the most part unsound doctrine to support the falling away; Scripture is profitably for sound doctrine, the private notes of Scofield are profitable for Scofield and Oxford.

The following quote is from the Baptist Press, February 1999, entitled SBC is ‘biggest success story’ of dispensationalism, in which a Baptist professor of history says:

The Scofield Reference Bible, first published in 1909 with notes explaining the dispensations, became extremely important to the movement. Weber cited a 1987 survey of 461 ministers that found 41 percent cited the Scofield Bible as having the greatest influence on their eschatology, while 33 percent listed a seminary education as the greatest influence.  {}

2.  “Knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private [a]interpretation, 21 for prophecy never came by the will of man, but [b]holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.

The Bible is One is emphasized constantly in this Preaching Through the Bible, the private notes of Scofield strive to slice the Bible into pieces with private interpretations.  A significant part of the Bible is One is self-interpretation, alias the Bible explains itself seen clearly in the OT quotes in the NT that first quote, then explain, and then implement.

3.  The goal of this message, PTB 13b, is to introduce you to the Christian Lawyer Philip Mauro who practiced law before the Supreme Court and wrote in 1917, the same year as the second edition of the Scofield Reference Bible a book entitled “The Gospel of the Kingdom with an examination of Modern Dispensationalism”, the points in Scripture where Scofield theology and notes make their most deceitful private interpretations of Scripture, claiming among other unsound doctrine on the kingdom of God and of Christ that Jesus did first preach the gospel of the kingdom (what a gracious acknowledgement by Scofield), but when the Jewish nation rejected it, He put off the gospel of the kingdom in another dispensation called the non-Bible word of Millennium.

NOTE:  Read about Philip online at file:///C:/Users/jvmcMobile/Desktop/4%20Hebrews%20on%20FB/major%20diversions%20of%20Scofield%20theology/Biography%20of%20Philip%20Mauro%20–%20Schoettle%20Publishing%20Company.pdf

Among other things he wrote the legal brief for William Jennings Bryan to win against Clarence Darrow the famous Scopes monkey trial against evolution.

NOTE:  And to give you the online link to a free link that allows you to either read or free download every chapter, preface plus 16 chapters, of the book on The Gospel of the Kingdom with an examination of Modern Dispensationalism ”.  (It is an old book first published in 1917, and I bought the last copy, but the newer ones are re published in 1974 and are on Amazon also.)

(1).  Yes, it is old, but it was written as a natural reaction of a Christian to obvious unsound doctrine, the same year as the second edition of the Scofield Reference Bible.  It is important also for you to see that immediately many Christians with Bible knowledge objected and witness to the follies, mistakes, and unsound doctrine of the Scofield Private Interpretations.  All were not as gullible as the SBC as mentioned previously, and at some point, we need to figure out why?  Some attribute the acceptance of Scofield in Dallas and the south as:  (1)  Of course he was called as pastor of the First Congregationalists Church of Dallas; (2) He was instrumental through his disciple Chafer with organizing the Dallas Theological Seminary; (3) He had served in the Confederacy during the Civil War although being from Michigan; (4) And speculation is that the Scofield Reference Bible, like it is today in Lifeway, was promoted by the Broadman Press of the SBC.

(2).  If you and I had the patience, courage, and convictions to write The Gospel of the Kingdom with an examination of Modern Dispensationalism, we could not do any better except on one point.  In 1917 the world was struggling to create the modern nation of Israel, it only happened as you well know in 1948.  Mauro like many anti- Christian Zionist today did not appreciate the flow of Jews back to Israel, but as we well know in the prophesies of Zechariah, both the restoration of the Jews to Israel is predicted, the forever kingdom, and at the final battle of Megiddo, world war III, one half of Jerusalem will be taken captive and the other saved by Jesus Himself, after they repent, with His feet on the Mount of Olives.

I.  Some Highlights of “The Gospel of the Kingdom with an examination of Modern Dispensationalism  with other references online.  The body of literature denouncing the Scofield notes, and Scofield himself, is far to large to ignore!  And the book of Jude has something to say about him which will come at the end, bottom line.

NOTE:  Scofield theology is built around 3 words and concepts, not found even once in the Bible:  rapture, dispensationalism, and millennium.  It should also be noted that in 1909 and 1917 were the first invasions of any kind of theology in the homes of American people with the Private Interpretations of the Scofield Notes.

1.  On the Secret Rapture Fallacy.

     a.  “Secret Rapture” Fallacy.—The teaching regarding “secret rapture,” or the silent taking away of the church before the time of trouble, is a most serious error. Note well the sequence of events in verses 30 and 31 of Matthew 24. The gathering of the elect (verse 31) follows the coming of Christ in glory and power (verse 30). Do not be misled by the false use of the words “Parousia” and “apokalupsis.” The very word translated “coming” in Matthew 24:27 and 1 Thessalonians 4:15 is the Greek word “Parousia.” “Lightning,” “voice,” “shout” are words which describe the “Parousia.”

      b.  As Paul predicted in II Timothy, that it would be like a cancer in the SBC, he condemned it as unsound doctrine.

16 But shun profane and [i]idle babblings, for they will [j]increase to more ungodliness. 17 And their message will spread like cancer. Hymenaeus and Philetus are of this sort, 18 who have strayed concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past; and they overthrow the faith of some. 19 Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: “The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of [k]Christ depart from iniquity.”  (II Timothy 1:16-19)

NOTE:  Here is another point for reading about the Private Interpretations of Scofield in 1917 as they shocked many Bible conservatives then, except Baptists, on what had previously been unheard in America.  We should consider this as Theological Thoughts of the Commager “Watershed of American Thought”, as well as part of the “Seducing Spirits and Doctrines of Devils” of the falling away.  The Roman Vatican about the year 1000 AD lost continuing with Christ, His way and Plans with the seducing spirits in I Timothy 4, and the SBC started losing that continuity between 1909 and 1917, fulfilled with the dark ages of the falsely called conservative resurgence.

{For the opposite side, see Judge Pressler, on the Conservative Resurgence at }

I have already pointed out, but it is needful to keep the fact in mind, that in the latter part of the nineteenth century an extraordinary change took place in the teaching of certain groups of orthodox Christians. It was a radical change. Indeed, “revolutionary” is not too strong a term to apply to it; for the literature of the Christian centuries will be searched in vain for a trace of the new doctrine, which then suddenly sprang up, and soon spread far and wide. That new doctrine was a system of “dispensational” teaching, characterized chiefly by a wholesale and indiscriminate futurism. Every promise and prophecy was relegated to the future that could by any possibility be dealt with in that way; and thus the era of grace and the gospel of grace were stripped of what properly belonged to them–specially the blessed and glorious truth of the Kingdom–the gospel of God was robbed of its power, and grievous damage was done to the people of God, and indeed to all men.

3.  You should appreciate this introduction of dispensationalism from a noted researched, communication, and conservative Christian of character.

What is central in this novel system of “dispensationalism” is the doctrine, theretofore unheard of, that Christ and His forerunner, when they announced that the Kingdom of God was at hand, were thereby “offering” to the Jews the earthly kingdom of their grossly carnal expectations; that (astonishing to relate) the Jews refused what they most eagerly looked for, when it was thus proffered to them; and that thereupon God withdrew the offer and “postponed” the Kingdom to another “dispensation.”

4.  Sorry about the date, here it seems Mauro’s Gospel of the Kingdom was published in 1927.

The Gospel of the Kingdom

by Philip Mauro

Published In 1927

THROUGH an incident of recent occurrence I was made aware of the extent–far greater than I had imagined–to which the modern system of dispensationalism has found acceptance amongst orthodox Christians; and also of the extent–correspondingly great–to which the recently published “Scofield Bible” (which is the main vehicle of the new system of doctrine referred to) has usurped the place of authority that belongs to God’s Bible alone.

The fact is that dispensationalism is modernism. It is modernism, moreover, of a very pernicious sort, such that it must have a “Bible” of its own for the propagation of its peculiar doctrines, since they are not in the Word of God. Ample proof of this will be given in the pages that follow.

NOTE:  Most of us never thought of Scofieldism as Modernism, but his arguments make sense, and would help to explain how Dallas Theological Seminary, always a hotbed of Scofield theology with famous graduates like Jeffress, Jeremiah, and Tim LaHaye, has recent announced alliance with Baylor and Lou Giglio with the contemplative mysticism of the Passion Movement.

5.  When challenged, hopefully you have noticed, Scofield mites get emotional as they have no other ground to stand on than emotion with the Private notes of Scofield, Scriptural quotes taken out of context help them little.

      a.  An emotional reaction on Facebook as confronted with the series on SunGrist WordPress and SunGrist Facebook of “Mistakes of Scofield Theology”.

You are entitled to your own opinions, interpretations, and with whom you ally yourself. But there is no need to blacken the entire Southern Baptist Convention, nor to label as “lies” the opinions and interpretations of other Christian seekers. We are an imperfect people serving a perfect God, and we ally ourselves with the truth as He gives us the light to see it. That some have different goals, missions, and insights by the grace of God is experiential. Have the grace to treat your fellow servants of God with understanding and patience. Your God does. But I don’t yet have His patience. If you continue to malign your fellow seekers of God on these pages you will be removed. This page is a resource for Pastors and other seekers, not a shooting gallery for the Father of Lies.

NOTE:  Of course apart from the fact that a good offense is the best form of defense, Scofield in his private notes and hence his followers today have always tried to get ahead of what they will be accused of:  accusations of liars that uncover the Private Interpretations of Scofield as lies; the cry for literal Bibles when they know that rapture, dispensationalism, and millennium are not even found in the Bible; rightly dividing the word of God of Scripture they rally around taken completely out of context and using to defense dispensations, and so on and on.

b.  Here was the mild answer of SunGrist online in Facebook.

Such is “the doctrine of Christ,” concerning which the apostle John says: “He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the FATHER and the SON” (comp. the Lord’s words in John 14:23) ; and, “If there come any unto you, and bring not THIS DOCTRINE, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed” (2 John 9, 10). This is the “doctrine” concerning which the editor of the “Scofield Bible” says that they who grounded themselves upon it were “the really dangerous sect” at Corinth; and concerning which he also says in another publication (“Our Hope” December, 1919), “The Sermon on the Mount is law, and that raised to its highest, most deathful and destructive potency.” What terrible words are these! Surely the first nine verses of the Sermon, the “Beatitudes,” are quite enough to refute this false and injurious statement, and to show that the discourse pertains not to the curse of the law but to the free blessings of the gospel.

6.  Dispensationalist like in the Private Scofield interpretations go overboard on striving to make so much of the Bible, like the Sermon on the Mount, about law and not grace; because they want to save grace for their special kingdom of the millennium and by the Jewish nation.  By the way the Jewish nation in this false kingdom evangelizes the rest of the world, most of the world with a second chance are saved, and the Jewish nation and Rabbis do what Jesus was unable to do during His life on earth.

We ask careful attention now to the grace of God as marvelously displayed in the Sermon on the Mount; and after that we will examine the reasons which the editor of the Scofield Bible has brought forward in support of his statement that the Sermon on the Mount is “not grace” but “law, and that raised to its highest, most deathful and destructive potency”–a thing to be feared and shunned.

7.  Perhaps you have never thought of how the Private Scofield Interpretations are guilty of “another gospel of a different kind” with a curse on them.

One of the unhappiest of the results of this violent wrenching of the “things the angels desire to look into” from the place to which the word of God assigns them, is that “the Kingdom of God” in its entirety, including “the gospel of the Kingdom” (Mat. 24:14; Acts 20:25; 28:31) has been transferred bodily from this present age, and “postponed” to a hypothetical and mythical “dispensation” yet to come. This surely is a matter of such importance as to demand the most earnest attention of every saint of God; for it does violence to both the Old Testament and the New.

8.  On how the Private Interpretations in Notes of the Scofield Reference Bible depend on the equally unsound doctrines of both the Rabbis and Zealots.

Then as to what this modern system of teaching is, it will be a surprise to most of those who love the Lord Jesus Christ to learn that, in respect to the central and vitally important subject of the Kingdom of God, twentieth century dispensationalism is practically identical with first century RABBINISM. For the cardinal doctrine of the Jewish rabbis of Christ’s day was that, according to the predictions of the prophets of Israel, the purpose and result of the Messiah’s mission would be the re-constituting of the Jewish nation; the re-occupation by them of the land of Palestine; the setting up again of the earthly throne of David; and the exaltation of the people of Israel to the place of supremacy in the world.

9.  You need to carefully read the notes like this one from Scofield on Matthew 11:20.  Plain and simple, it is the heresy of unsound doctrine.

In the “notes,” the alleged rejection is located at Matthew 11:20, as appears by the following statement:

“The Kingdom of heaven announced as ‘at hand’ by John the Baptist, by the King Himself, and by the twelve, and attested by mighty works, has been morally rejected.”

Then the Lord’s words recorded in Matthew 11:28, 29, are called by the editor, “The new message of Jesus–not the kingdom but rest and service”; and this, we are told, is “the pivotal point in the ministry of Jesus,”–that is to say the point at which He abandoned His message about the Kingdom’s being at hand, and began to substitute a message of entirely different character.

I earnestly protest that these statements are wholly erroneous, and confidently maintain that the Lord had but one message, which was the gospel of God, and that the Kingdom which He preached while on earth and introduced when He sent the Holy Ghost from heaven, is the very “rest and service” which He offered and still offers to all the weary and heavy laden ones.

10.  In chapter 4 of The Gospel of the Kingdom with examination of Modern Dispensationalism, Philip Mauro points some of the errors of the postponement theory of the Private Interpretations of Scofield theology and notes.

Some of the errors made in the attempt to sustain the postponement theory are almost unbelievable. Thus in an article by Dr. Scofield appearing in “Our Hope” for April 1920, it is said that “the time speedily came when it was clear that the true King was rejected.” That time he locates at the chapter we have just been considering, Matthew XI, where the Lord upbraids the cities in which His mightiest works were done. “From that moment,” says Dr. S., “the message is changed; it is no longer ‘the Kingdom of heaven is at hand.'” The postponement theory demands that it should be so; and therefore Dr. S. unhesitatingly affirms that it is so. But it is recorded that, as late as when the Lord was on His way to Jerusalem to die there, He sent forth–not twelve as at first, but–seventy to proclaim, “the Kingdom of god is come nigh unto you” (Luke 10:9). And He instructed His disciples, in case they were rejected, to say–not that the Kingdom was withdrawn and postponed, but to say–“Notwithstanding be ye sure of this, that the Kingdom of God is come nigh unto you” (v. 11). Thus we see that just where the editor of the “Scofield Bible” says the announcement of the Kingdom ceased entirely, the Lord commanded that it be proclaimed with increasing emphasis and with greater positiveness. Extended comments on this passage will be found in the following pages.

11.  Scofield’s private interpretations once again play with the meaning, message, and Christ in the Bible on the kingdom.

For it is to be noted that the dispensationalists, in their effort to make the Epistles (and also the later part of the Gospels) agree with their theory have resorted to the strange expedient of saying that the phrase “Kingdom of God” meant the Kingdom of Jewish hopes at first, but after it was “rejected,” and “withdrawn,” the term was used with a different meaning. Of course, no proof in support of this is cited; for there is none.

12.  On the real Bible of Inspiration about the Kingdom of God versus the Private Interpretations of Scofield with unsound doctrine and teachings.  What a marvel that for over 100 years Southern Baptist pastors of fame and large churches have fostered such heresies, and the fact that it has happened proves that it had to be more than doctrines of devils in the SBC and falling away, it had to “Seducing spirits and doctrines of devils”.

I HAVE sought to show in the preceding pages that the Kingdom of God which was the subject of Christ’s preaching and teaching is just what all Christians have understood it to be until recent times, that is, a purely spiritual realm; and further that it had not been postponed when His parting words to His disciples were spoken (Acts 1:3). I do not see how any testimonies as to this could possibly be clearer or stronger than those we have cited from all the four Gospels; or how, in the light of our Lord’s own words, there can be any question that the long accepted Christian doctrine as to the true Israel and as to the Kingdom foretold by the prophets, is founded squarely upon Christ’s own teaching. Yet the “Scofield Bible” asserts (in its “Introduction to the Gospels”) that the long-accepted views of Christ’s followers concerning those supremely important subjects, were not derived from His teaching, but were “a legacy in Protestant thought from post-Apostolic and Roman Catholic theology.”

II.  You are prayerfully ask to consider (1) that seducing spirits and doctrines of devils caused the conservative resurgence in the SBC, and (2) the pastors and the Judge of the 10 year plan that destroyed thousands of better Christian brothers, their careers and reputations, and that split the SBC into 3 denominations thus happening not only love but also world evangelism must place them in the category of the ungodly men of the book of Jude.

Jude New King James Version (NKJV)

Greeting to the Called

1 Jude, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James,

To those who are called, [a]sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ:

2 Mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you.

Contend for the Faith

3 Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. 4 For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord [b]God and our Lord Jesus Christ.

Old and New Apostates

5 But I want to remind you, though you once knew this, that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe. 6 And the angels who did not keep their [c]proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day; 7 as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the [d]vengeance of eternal fire.

8 Likewise also these dreamers defile the flesh, reject authority, and speak evil of dignitaries. 9 Yet Michael the archangel, in [f]contending with the devil, when he disputed about the body of Moses, dared not bring against him a reviling accusation, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!” 10 But these speak evil of whatever they do not know; and whatever they know naturally, like brute beasts, in these things they corrupt themselves. 11 Woe to them! For they have gone in the way of Cain, have run greedily in the error of Balaam for profit, and perished in the rebellion of Korah.

Apostates Depraved and Doomed

12 These are spots in your love feasts, while they feast with you without fear, serving only themselves. They are clouds without water, carried [h]about by the winds; late autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, pulled up by the roots; 13 raging waves of the sea, foaming up their own shame; wandering stars for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever.

14 Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men also, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints, 15 to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.”

Apostates Predicted

16 These are grumblers, complainers, walking according to their own lusts; and they mouth great swelling words, flattering people to gain advantage. 17 But you, beloved, remember the words which were spoken before by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ: 18 how they told you that there would be mockers in the last time who would walk according to their own ungodly lusts. 19 These are [i]sensual persons, who cause divisions, not having the Spirit.

Maintain Your Life with God

20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.

22 And on some have compassion, [j]making a distinction; 23 but others save [k]with fear, pulling them out of the [l]fire, hating even the garment defiled by the flesh.

Glory to God

Now to Him who is able to keep [m]you from stumbling,

And to present you faultless

Before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy,

To [n]God our Savior,

[o]Who alone is wise,

Be glory and majesty,

Dominion and power

Both now and forever.

III.  A FOOTNOTE, what does lewdness mean in the Bible?

Lewdness. “(Acts 18:14), villainy or wickedness, not lewdness in the modern” “sense of the word. The word “lewd” is from the Saxon, and means” “properly “ignorant,” “unlearned,” and hence low, vicious (Acts” 17:5). See where Lewdness occurs in the Bible…

What destroyed the SBC (in Spirit, love, and world evangelism) was the “seducing spirits and doctrines of devils”, alias the falling away, mainly in the influence of the Mistakes of the Scofield Theology in the Scofield Reference Bible. Please follow this series of “Mistakes in Scofield Theology”, an attempt to verify and prove beyond a reasonable shadow of doubt these SEDUCING SPIRITS AND DOCTRINES OF DEVILS in the SBC instigated the falsely called “conservative resurgence”, another lie like the pastors/Presidents of the Judge Pressler 10 year plan that succeeded in control of the SBC by destroying better Christian brothers of love, their reputations and careers under the disguise of their false claim of a literal Bible (the Scofield Reference Bible, what a deadly joke) centered around words not even found in the Bible: rapture, dispensationalism, and millennium.
