PTB2-37: In God We Trust

In God We Trust: The Motto

One of the first found references of the motto “In God We Trust” is heard in the U.S. National Anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner. The song was written by Francis Scott Key in 1814 and later adopted as the national anthem. In the last stanza Key writes a variation of the phrase: “…And this be our motto: In God is our trust. And the Star Spangled Banner in triumph shall wave, O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.” The words were shortened to In God We Trust and first applied to U.S. coins in 1864.

In God We Trust: The History
The U. S. Department of Treasury states “the motto, IN GOD WE TRUST, was placed on United States coins largely because of the increased religious sentiment existing during the Civil War. Secretary of the Treasury Salmon P. Chase received many appeals from devout persons throughout the country, urging that the United States recognize the Deity on United States coins.

From Treasury Department records, it appears that the first such appeal came in a letter dated November 13, 1861. It was written to Secretary Chase by Rev. M. R. Watkinson, Minister of the Gospel from Ridleyville, Pennsylvania. As a result, Secretary Chase instructed James Pollock, Director of the Mint at Philadelphia, to prepare a motto, in a letter dated November 20, 1861:

Dear Sir: No nation can be strong except in the strength of God, or safe except in His defense. The trust of our people in God should be declared on our national coins. You will cause a device to be prepared without unnecessary delay with a motto expressing in the fewest and tersest words possible this national recognition. It was found that the Act of Congress dated January 18, 1837, prescribed the mottoes and devices that should be placed upon the coins of the United States.”

Pollock suggested “Our Trust Is In God,” “Our God And Our Country,” “God And Our Country,” and “God Our Trust.” Chase picked “In God We Trust” to be used on some of the government’s coins. The first time “In God We Trust” appeared on our coins was in 1864 on the new two cent coin, and by 1909 it was included on most the other coins. During the height of the cold war, on July 11, 1955, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed Public Law 140 making it mandatory that all coinage and paper currency display the motto.

In God We Trust: The Foundation
American history demonstrates repeatedly that the nation was founded on Christian principles and its founding fathers wished to acknowledge that fact all over Washington D.C. buildings, in official documents, and historical speeches. Less than a hundred years after its Declaration of Independence, In God We Trust was proclaimed on its coins. America is a free nation, and freedom of religion is still guaranteed in the Constitution’s First Amendment.

President Thomas Jefferson wrote, “The God who gave us life gave us liberty at the same time” and asked ‘Can the liberties of a nation be secure when we have removed a conviction that these liberties are of God?’”

The Bible says:
“It is better to trust the LORD than to put confidence in man” (Psalm 118:8).

“He has put a new song in my mouth, praise unto our God; many shall see it, and fear and will trust in the LORD” (Psalm 40:3, NKJV).

“It is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord GOD, that I may declare all thy works” (Psalm 73:28, NKJV).

“The fear of man brings a snare: but whoever puts his trust in the LORD shall be safe” (Proverbs 29:25, NKJV).

Why would Pelosi tear down a 150 year old sign, “In God we Trust”.

She does not qualify as the man of sin of the Bible, but we must look as a nation more closely at this person called Nancy Pelosi, and how much influence she exerts as a National Leader to the corruption and Falling Away from God of our nation. Ask yourself the question, why would any American leader destroy that historical testimony to faith in God, and the answer would come back surely, SHE HAS NONE!

Preface:  Why is It So Difficult for All Americans to See?

In these days of Falling Away, it is indeed the those that would advance beyond the Doctrine of Christ into theology, ignoring both the good preaching (prophesy) of the Bible  and good Bible preaching today unhampered by the restraints of theology.  {This is not to say that our preaching today is synonymous with the preaching of Jesus, the Prophets, and the Apostles in the complete measure of the influence of God the Holy Spirit; however in reality, the closer those two come together, determines the realiability and accuracy of both our Bible understanding and preaching!)  One good and recent example of how theology tries to advance ahead of the doctrine of Christ is Mohler on the Atonement.

“Christ died not as a substitute for all sinners but only for those predestined to believe, a leading Southern Baptist Calvinist said in a weekend podcast explaining the atonement, a Christian doctrine that describes how sinners are reconciled to God.”

“As I understand God’s Word, if Jesus truly died for the sins of all mankind, if even one of those persons ends up in hell, then that would make a mockery of the sufficiency of Christ’s atoning blood on Calvary’s cross,” said a caller to Albert Mohler’s “Ask Anything” weekend edition of his daily news podcast May 3. “Could you help me on this subject, please?”  {}

This makes a mockery of John 3:16 and the simplicity of the Good News of the Atonement, that “Christ died for the sins of the world”.  Statements like this one in his defense of theology, stating that “I believe that theology rooted unapologetically in Scripture is the only sure foundation for the home, the church, and the Christian life.” And similar statements by the President of Truett Seminary come short of both the Doctrine of Christ and the authority of Scripture as being not only rooted but dominate and the sole criterion for faith and practice.  {Mohler for Christianity Today on the humiliation of the SBC,  }  It truthfully seems that what we have is a humiliation of the shortcomings of theology to be the criterion that brings the Bible to the judgment bar of human wisdom and reasoning, no substitute for the preaching in the Bible and of the Bible.

Those conservatives have to appreciate most of what Mohler writes…however he over estimates and over states the importance of a dominance of theology in these words–

Because we hear a question ringing down through the corridors of time: “When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”

In answering that question, what could be more important than theological education? What greater cause could form our joy and sense of moment tonight? In no small way we gather tonight to answer Christ’s question with a faithful assertion of both word and will.

How then does Jesus’ question in this text point to theological education as the most important endeavor on earth?

In its servant role to the church, theological education is the necessary means whereby pastors, preachers, teachers of the church, evangelists, missionaries, church planters, and church leaders are formed in the faith of the church – that faith that is orthodox, apostolic, biblical, and very much alive.

Doctrine and Spirit Go Hand in Hand: “The Testimony of Jesus is the Spirit of Prophesy”.  About the title, it may seem strange to have a title from Revelation to begin this message from Hebrews; however the distortions of the Doctrine of Christ are as much “seducing spirits and doctrines of devils”  (I Timothy 4:3,4) as denying marriage for priests and forbidding good meat blessed by God for man’s needs.  Prophesy and preaching in the Bible are almost synonymous and inter-changeable:  when you have bad doctrine, their exist a bad human spirit even as when you have good and sound doctrine there is a good spirit sort of like the famous fiction book “The Good Spirit of Laurel Ridge” versus the bad spirit of the fiction based on fiction of the “Left Behind Series”.  Test the spirits, referring primarily to the spirit of men that are preachers, the Apostle John writes, for many evils spirits are gone out into the world.  From I Corinthians 14 we learn as churches and preachers are forbidden against unknown tongues that prophesy and preaching are about the same, and good preaching includes to exhort, comfort, and edify.  The Testimony of Jesus is the best sound doctrine of the Bible, and the Spirit of Prophesy or preaching is the best sound spirit.  Old Testament Prophets were the preachers of their day, and in spite of being unpopular compare to many preachers today, by and large they were rejected in their doctrines and spirit by God’s people.  Theology tries to replace the foolish nature of preaching as compared to the honor of the wisdom of this world, but buried in the very nature of “prophesy can not in old time by the will of man but by the spirit of God” is not only preaching but prediction, and the OT quotes in the NT explain what the Great Spirit of God the Holy Spirit is communicating, through Bible and through preaching.

NOTE:  In the interactive online method of SunGrist on WordPress, you can hear the well listened to “A Message on the Doctrine of Christ from the book of Hebrews”, in 3 approximately 20 Parts.

Look at our American society and the Bible:  first it is obvious that the Bible teaches a great apostasy called the Falling Away before the second coming.

Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition,  who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.”  (II Thessalonians 2:3,4)

While so many in American because of the falsehoods of the fictitious “Left Behind Series” are looking for a false rapture (rapture is not even a word in the Bible) before the falling away, above Paul and the Word of God through Paul clearly states the proper God ordained sequence of events as (1) first the falling away (what part of “for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first” do you not understand?); and (2) second the man of sin, the son of perdition, is made visible to the world on the world scene, and SunGrist votes for Scofield and his cohorts coming on the scene in 1909 with the Scofield Reference Bible.

Who is more stubborn as a nation, the majority in Israel because they even from the first century have refused to believe the Lord Jesus Christ as the Son of God, or America because they now can not see their own falling away; a falling away from the first love (Revelation 2:4 and Matthew 24:12) and priority of loyalty for Jesus, and a falling away from the sound doctrines of the Bible (II Timothy 4:3,4).

Stubbornness angers God on the part of Israel or America!

“And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they reverted and behaved more corruptly than their fathers, by following other gods, to serve them and bow down to them. They did not cease from their own doings nor from their stubborn way.”  (Judges 2:19)

“You stubborn people! You are heathen at heart and deaf to the truth. Must you forever resist the Holy Spirit? That’s what your ancestors did, and so do you!” (Acts 7:51)

  1.  One reason for this stubbornness which angers God is Americans for tolerance to the extreme, enamored with the American Democratic Faith, somehow continuing to believe in the inherent goodness of men, especially Americans; and they just will not get it in their head that there is a vast difference between American children of the world and American children of God.  The subject is the hard to see present falling away now, so there is not sufficient time or space to quote on the scriptures that make a distinction between Americans as children either of the world or children of God with a great gap fixed between them by the Eternal Judge, God our Heavenly Father and Creator, only a few are listed now.
  1.  The children of the world are wiser than the children of light.

“The rich man had to admire the dishonest rascal for being so shrewd. And it is true that the children of this world are more shrewd in dealing with the world around them than are the children of the light.”  (Luke 16:8 New Living Translation)

  •  Do you think you can be a friend of the world and those in the world and get away with it?

New International Version
You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.”  (James 4:4)

Pastor James like Jesus and the other Apostles were of course Jews, and it is to Israel that we are indebted for the oracles of God, but they understood the difference.

  •  From another Christian Jew, the Apostle John, the Apostle of love, evangelism, and graciousness.

Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know [b]us, because it did not know Him. Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure”  (I John 2:1-3 NJKV)

NOTE:  See even here you Americans and church members have trouble distinguishing between the purified and the not purified.  Of course, we must admit that non believers sometimes make it hard to tell the difference because they are better at PR than believers.  Have you noticed that your friends of unbelief that you talk to about Jesus and refuse to heed want you to honor them more than the words of Jesus and God.  They seek to draw you into friendship with the world, and to deny any difference between yourself and them!

  •  That naturally brings up another reason for stubbornness to admit the falling away; that is self-love, self-image, and pride of life passions of this world, not of the Heavenly Father, have become such a staple in Christian lives that there is little or no difference between the children of light and the children of the world.  The forbidden “pride of life” of I John can easily be correlated with the self-image of an unbeliever, you thinks himself so highly and good that there is no need to trade “let this mind be in you which was also in Christ” for what he considers of himself, and being wiser than the children of light he convinces not only himself but others around him of a legend in his own mind for many different false reasons.
  •  Americans and especially the Southern Baptist Convention since 1909, and more so recently, have been bombarded with the Scofield mites false claim that the falling away can not take place until after some equally as false rapture of two false raptures.  THIS IS ACCORDING TO THE BIBLE A DEMONIC VEIL OF THE RAPTURE!  This is labored in many blogs and messages of SunGrist and SunGrist online at for over 13 years, so here it will be only advised to please download the PDF and read it at

NOTE:  Since the subject is the falling away now and how difficult to see and understand now, the false secret rapture will not be labored here, but the reader is referred to several references of Bible quotes at (1) a collection on Google plus called “The Demonic Veil of a Secret Rapture” at ; (2) The real Day of the Lord and LORD on at ; (3) a study of II Timothy of “what sort” and “that sort” of persons that first taught a secret rapture and tracing them all the way through II Timothy to the Christian fables of II Timothy 4:3,4 at ; and (4) efforts at many sound doctrines on last things or eschatology by using the SunGrist Topical Bible with its home page index of Bible topics, .

There are many other reasons for the reluctance of Americans to admit the Falling Away NOW, and an effort will be made to get to those in this following book on the Book of Hebrews, which by the way is the book of the Falling Away.  Listen to it for yourself as you enjoy reading the following many, many Bible quotes and the conservative, almost squeaky, Bible comments.  As in all 7 volumes of the LCBCommentaries, SunGrist never forms a conclusion or makes a statement without showing it is true in the actual words of the Bible.  Learn Christ Bible Commentaries follows the example of B.H. Carroll on first of all exegetical teaching, the preaching from the Bible over theology as theology comes from the wisdom of men and preaching the Word is both how to understand the Bible and is also the way of salvation for the world.  And Carroll’s love of history, you will find much from SunGrist with emphasis on Bible history, prediction, and prophesy.

As you break away from the Scofield Theology by an actual literal Bible method of hermeneutics, the ASPI for Authorized Semi-Public Interpretation of the Bible which is based on II Peter 1:19-21 and the way God the Holy Spirit meant for the Bible to be understood as evidenced by the internal structure of the Bible with OT quotes in the NT where Jesus and the Apostles provide us with not only proper interpretation but also application and implementation.  Some of the benefits of such Bible based hermeneutics can be listed:  (1)  respect for the teaching of Jesus on the new birth in a recognition that it must be a 9 month re-birth under the regeneration of the Spirit of God, the neglect of which has allowed Bible students to miss the truth in the parable of seed and sower that three-fourths of preaching or seed sown will be unfruitful (certainly most of the seeds of theology in spite of Baptist like Mohler the President of SBTS who has the audacity and pride of status to make the false claim that “Jesus is Theology”; (2) what the churches don’t want you to hear, that they are leaders in the falling away as they are the only ones to have anything to fall away from, primarily from first love of Jesus and sound doctrine; (3) that in the book of Revelation in context of the whole Bible, with the shortcoming Christians and churches from the very beginning and with what God told the discouraged Elijah, that each generation has only 7,000 overcomes and the rest like Dobbins of church administration said, “You can fill a church with empty people”; and so on and on in the Learn Christ Bible Commentaries you will find with this Bible preaching versus theology method you will find Bible truths beyond the norm of man’s wisdom to explain, much like Dr. B.H. Carroll in “An Interpretation of the English Bible” with his 17 volume complete set of commentaries, only bested in in 7 volumes with the assistance of the ASPI method of interpretation based on the internal structure of the Bible ITSELF, and the rules that great design of God has provided for self-interpretation.  In short, the Prophets were preachers; and in this kind of Bible preaching Paul pointed out that “when the world by wisdom (theology) knew not God it behooved God by the foolishness of preaching to save those that believe”.

Lastly, this book is dedicated to three of our heroes of youthful Christian faith from Galena Park, outstanding Christian scholars, who feel victim to the extreme unsound doctrines of the Theology out of Harvard, Yale, and other seminaries:  Dr. Raymond Vickrey of Baylor, Dr. Charles Fox of Harvard and NY University, and Dr. Bert Dominy of the Truett Seminary.  They initially did so much good work for Christ and His kingdom, and we should not allow if possible a duplication of such victims of theology.
