PTB3-12: Mourners and Believers Part 1.

5-12:  Mourners and Believers:  Lazarus, Martha, Mary, and Jesus.  (John 11)

Correction in beliefs of one lady, Martha, about the future resurrection of the last day.

Then Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.  But even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You.” Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”  Martha said to Him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”  Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.  And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”  She said to Him, “Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.”

Mourners and Believers in John 11.

  1. More Mourners than Believers.

Mourners are listed first because there are almost always at funerals or deaths more mourners than believers.  How can you tell that?  Because they are mourning more than believing that the departed one has gone to a much better place, a place in heaven 1000 times better than their life on earth, especially if they lingered in pain and suffering.  Actually, an amount of mourning is necessary for family and friends are grieved by the lost of one who meant so much to them for so many years.

Let’s consider believers and mourners at a funeral such as the one that Jesus attended at the death of Lazarus.  Actually, this was several days after the funeral, because Mary said as Jesus requested entrance into the tomb that the body had already decayed; also, Mary said, “Lord if you have been here, he would not have died.”

  • It is unbelievable the details that the Apostle John relates in this long chapter, John 11, of the mourning of the death of Lazarus,

John 11 is one of the longest chapters in the book of John, rightly so because John is centered around only 7 miracles of Jesus of the many Jesus performed, and they started with the first simply miracle of Jesus turning the water into wine to this seventh of raising Lazarus from the dead.
