Preliminary Outline of Hebrews

INTRODUCTION:  Beginning, Body, and Bottom Line of Hebrews.

  1.   Beginning of Hebrews, what is God like:  “God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.” (Hebrews 1:1-4)
  2. Body of Hebrews 13 chapters, the Doctrine of Christ includes partakers of His nature: “Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection…”  (Hebrews 6:1a)
  3. Bottom Line of Hebrews, that God may make you complete:  “Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,  Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is well pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.”  (Hebrews 13:20,21)

I. The Doctrine of Christ in Hebrews 1, most probable full extent of Paul’s initial synagogue address as once he identified the Christ of the Old Testament and the Son of God with Jesus of Nazareth, they ran him off and tried to kill him.

1. Starts off with God, then Son. (Hebrews 1:1-3)
“God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high…”

Note: Hebrews 1 is almost all quotes from the Old Testament, so Paul introduces with both the Hebrew history of the “fathers” and the OT Prophets.
2. Then Lord for Jesus. (Hebrews 1:10)
“And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands…”

II. Beginning with Hebrews 2 of combining the Doctrine of Christ with US, principles of the Doctrine of Christ.

1. Heed those things taught by Jesus and the Disciples and witnessed by God.
(Hebrews 2:1)
2. Man and Jesus.
a. Man (Hebrews 2:6).
b. Jesus and getting Man and Jesus together in the Atonement. (Hebrews 2:9)
“But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.”

3. Doctrine and principles joined as One and in the Assembly, church. (Hebrews 2:12-13)
“Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee.” (Hebrews 2:12)
a. Quote of Psalm 22:22 in Hebrews 2:12.
b. Quote of Isaiah 8:6,7 in Hebrews 2:13.
4. Doctrine and principles continued to tie together as both the children and Christ become partakers of flesh and blood. (2:14-18)
a. Delivered flesh and blood from bondage because of the fear of death.
b. Christ took on the nature of Man, not the angels which were a little higher.
“Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil…” (2:14)
c. “Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.” (2:17)
d. Temptation is suffering, there again Christ identifies with the children or people. (2:18)

5. With the first mention of the name Christ and with Christ Jesus together. Paul brings the Doctrine of Chirst and the Principles or implications of the Doctrine of Christ firmly together with new names. (3:1-5)
a. The children or people are brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling.
b. Christ Jesus is the Apostle and High Priest of the Christian profession.

6. With the second mention of Christ (doctrine of Christ), we are the house of Christ if we hold firm unto the end. (3:6-13)
NOTE: now he launches into the first listed specific principle of “repentance from dead works”.

7. With this third mention of the word Christ or the Doctrine of Christ the principle of the doctrine of Christ in faith in God is highlighted. (3:14-19)
“For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end…” (3:14)
a. The judgment principle has already been mentioned as God decided and decides that “they shall not enter into His rest.”
b. And the faith in God principle in that it was unbelief that prevented them from eternal rest.

8. The promise of rest that remains for the rest of the people of God is an introduction to the resurrection of the dead. In the synagogue there would be both Pharisees and Saducess, the first believing in a resurrection of the dead and the second not. (4:1-13)

9. With the mention of “Jesus, the Son of God”, necessary in the doctrine of Christ comes a some what veiled but practical introduction to “baptisms”, here it is the baptism into the grace of God to help in time of needs and into the THRONE OF GRACE ITSELF. (4:14-5:4)

NOTE:  Paul was still talking in the language of a new Christian, of a lawyer of Israel and the Old Testament law, had not written his other 13 New Testament books, and was still speaking the language of the synagogues where he was raised and trained in the Law.  Later when he polished for publication the early synagogue addresses, the flavor and language of the initial addresses was keep.  We can therefore appreciate the simpler language.
a. Obey Him.
b. You are not listening!
c. Obey and listen to the first principles of the Doctrine of Christ, get baptized into the strong meat of the word, get skillful in the word of righteousness, grow up, and exercise your senses to discern both good and evil.

II. Summary of what has been happening in the first 5 chapters on both the Doctrine of Christ and the principles of the doctrine of Christ in 6:1,2
“Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. And this will we do, if God permit” (Hebrews 6:1-4)

** Paul wants to pass on to advanced doctrines of perfection, but strains to get off the first principles. so below is parenthetical on first principles.
P1: Partakers of the Holy Spirit is more on the baptisms. (6:4)
P2: Your sense of taste has been baptized in the word of God, and baptized into the powers of the world to come. (6:5)
P3: Repentance and atonement again. (6:6,7)
P4: Judgment (6:8)
P5: Salvation, the complete baptism in the One baptism. (6:9)

III. “Unto Perfection” in the Doctrine and Principles of Christ, Hebrews 6-13.

NOTE: Come now to the second part of Hebrews: (1) the First is the Doctrine and Principles of the Doctrine of Christ in Hebrews 1-5; and the (2) second is advanced doctrines unto perfection of the Doctrines of Christ with principles, Hebrews 6-13.

1. Unto Perfection in Hope of Salvation

a. Unto advanced doctrines of Christ and perfection with the promise of Hope of salvation. (6:15-19)
b. Advances into the Doctrine of Christ about the high priesthood, and the extent of the sure and immutable HOPE. (Christ and Melchesidec and what it means to us.}
(6:20)
c. About Hebrew history on this Melchisedec and Abraham in order to increase awareness of hope of salvation.. (7:1-11)
NOTE: somewhere in here Paul gets so enthused, almost forgetting his outline and completely free flowing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
d. The priesthood and law is changed.
(1). Law made nothing perfect, bringing in of better hope did. Hope by which we draw near to God. (7:19)

2. Summarizing unto perfection in the doctrine of Christ: (c) seated at the right hand of His Majesty in heaven, the great and only High Priest, minister of THE SANCTUARY–it is the true tabernacle and Jesus is the Minister,and the Lord Jesus Christ Himself pitched this tent, not any man.. (8:1-
a. Advanced doctrine under perfection and with our High Priest with a new minster. (8:6,7)
NOTE: A TRAIN of unto perfection in Christ from (1) the most excellent ministry of Christ, to (2) Him as the mediator of a better covenant, and (3) one which is established on better promises. From most excellent, to a better covenant Mediator, to better promises. You can’t beat that!
b. Mediator of a New covenant.
c. With better promises.
2. Unto the perfection of advanced doctrines and principles of Christ with the New Covenant. (8:9-13)
a. The New Covenant is unlike the Old Covenant which Israel did not keep anyway, so that under that covenant God did not regard them anyway;
b. Here is the covenant that God made with Israel at the beginning of the Last Days–
(1) the new birth of God putting the law in their minds and hearts;
(2) the covenant of God will be Israels God and Israel will in turn be His people;
(3) the priesthood of believers, everyone will know God in Israel from the least to the greatest;
(4). God will be merciful to their unrighteousness;
(5) God will remember their sins no more.
(6). The Old Covenant is made old, decayed, and will vanish away.
3. You need to know a little Hebrew history of the Old Covenant in order to appreciate the New. {Later in Romans Paul will expand God’s enlarged concept of Gentiles as all Israel saved.}. (9:1-9)
4. Unto advaned perfection in the doctrine of Christ moves on to REFORMATION, REDEMPTION, and INHERITANCE and thru the atonement. (9:10-22)
5. Back to the New Covenant and the “blood of the new testament”. (9:23-28)
(a). New tabernacle is heaven.
(b). atonement, once for all and for all time.
(c). Salvation is completed at the Second Coming!
6. Advanced doctrine of Christ unto perfection, THE DOCTRINE OF THE CROSS! (10:1-13)
7. CROSS, PERFECTION, AND SANCTIFICATION. (10:14-22)
(a). Unto perfection with faith.
(b). Confidence in drawing near to God because of: (1) true heart in full assurance of faith, (2) hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and (3) bodies washed with pure water.
8. Profession of our faith, ways to hold fast to that profession. (10:24-39)
9. About the Perfection of Faith with Hebrew historical examples– (Hebrews 11)
NOTE: Those people of Hebrew faith examples have not yet in heaven received the full promise of God, nor heavenly of our relatives and friends received it yet that have passed along. Perfection of the promise, alias sanctification or Christlikness, and the new bodies on the new earth is held in reserve for all of us to enjoy together at the second coming of Christ and the new earth. So those of faith in the past are now in heaven in sort of a holding pattern, and we can speculate that they are in training for their new positions on the new earth, God having taken unto Himself those before us to hold critical positions on the new earth.
10. “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12)

11. Practical implementations of unto perfection of faith (Hebrews 13)

SOME NOTES:

NOTE1: Paul as obvious author of Hebrews.  Don’t ever pay much attention to historical criticism as they tried to knock everything previously thought in order to magnify their superior knowledge.  In doing so, they leaned too heavily on the wisdom of the world and fell under the category of the wisdom of men that God scoffs. 

1.  The chains and persecutions that his listeners shared written about in Hebrews 10.

2.  The obvious style of Paul in all 14 letters that he wrote of showing his own outline, or the wherefores and therefores, and in the summing up, also the long sentences of free flow under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and yet considered the best of Greek, and naturally the lawyer like logic.

3.  In chapter 13, the mention of his own son in the faith Timothy and how those of Italy greet them, of course saying that went Paul finished the manuscript for published on which he had worked so many years before and after addresses in Hebrew synagogues.
